Your most important resolution

Your most important resolution home yogaThe cliche of having more ‘me-time’ is one used by nearly everyone who makes New Years resolutions.  Whether it’s in the form of exercising more, cooking more, losing weight, making time to relax, it’s all the same thing- ‘me-time’, aka- time to focus on yourself.  There’s nothing wrong with this, actually these are all wonderful things to commit yourself to, however, by the end of January, these More

How to be a cheapskate health nut

IMG_5738Being healthy can be very expensive.  Shopping local and paying for regular yoga can feel like a drain on your bank account.  I’m not here to argue with that, I often feel drained by my healthy lifestyle too.  Yes, it’s cheaper to buy processed, non-organic foods that have been shipped across an ocean and yes, it’s much cheaper to go for a walk rather than pay for regular yoga classes.  But you have to ask More

Killing it, Costa Rican style

100_5444I wish that I could start this post by telling you that I just got back from a trip to Costa Rica (and that this picture of me was from yesterday and not 5 years ago).  Unfortunately I haven’t been there in a few years but listening to stories of friends’ recent vacations there has been stirring up all sorts of lovely memories.  I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Costa Rica 3 times.  It’s where I took my advanced yoga training and More

3 things we can learn from toddlers

IMG_5186_2Yes, my toddler is a genius.  No, I’m not at all biased, you can ask my mom.  I always expected that as a parent, I would be the absolute teacher in the parent / child relationship.  What I didn’t expect was to learn a few very valuable lessons from him.  Toddler life is obviously pretty simple- eat, play, sleep, repeat.  Sometimes there may be some climbing, falling, and crying mixed in.  His world is about having the most fun in every moment as possible.  Multitasking is an extremely foreign concept to him.  He’s not worried about what his next meal’s going to be, whether he’s had any greens yet today, or exercised enough.  Ahhh, the simple life.  So what lessons can we learn from someone whose life is so simple? Make it New Years anytime

Make it new years anytime healthy drinkThere seems to be only one time of year that I find myself evaluating my routines, lifestyle, and habits: New Years.  Why is that?  Don’t we always need constant modification to be nudged back on track.  Maybe goals have changed?  Maybe living situations have changed?  I’ve recently made an effort to change a few habits and a goal to do this more than one time of year.  Why do we need the calendar to tell us it’s time for resolutions?  I say we start making them any time we feel a little ‘off’.  Adopting a few simple changes can help you get back to that general feeling of kick-ass’ness!  Here are a few things that have worked for me in just the past few weeks- More

My CSA challenge

csaLast fall I took on a challenge that I had been wanting to do for quite awhile- become a CSA member.  If you’re not familiar with that term, CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  Every week you pay a monetary share to the local farm and in return, receive a ‘box’ (or canvas tote bag in my case) of More

Break free of eating rules

Broken Rules Falls to Chaos Anarchy PiecesIf you’re anything like me, the more rules that you set up for yourself, the more time you spend thinking about how and when to break them.  Well then what’s the point to all these rules?  There is actually a proven psychology behind wanting those forbidden things.  When you feel deprived, it lays the ground for rebellion.  So let go of all those rules that you’ve set up for yourself (and More

I hate this 4 letter word

lose-weight-scale-croppedIn certain situations, 4 letter words really are necessary, but there is one in particular that, in my opinion, should be banned from the English language.  D-I-E-T is just a nasty word that seems to always cause destruction.  The problem with diets is that they just never seem to work long-term.  Diets don’t work because we think of the word as referring to a temporary change and that’s the problem.  When you’re only making More

Swimsuit season prep in 4 steps

swimsuit seasonIt’s that time of year again, and no, I’m not talking about holiday season.  The other day I walked into one of my favorite stores (OK, I’m talking about Target) and just past the front door is now a huge, brightly colored swimsuit section.  Swimsuit season (or bikini season, if you prefer) is upon us already.  If your motivation from making New Year’s resolutions has worn off, then maybe More
